چکیده

Information infrastructures, such as the Internet and Computational Grids, have enabled a networked computing and communication environment. Although many organizations depend on network-centric information operations to support critical missions, existing information infrastructures provide little guarantee of the dependability of network-centric computing and communication. This paper discusses some problems with the dependability of existing information infrastructures, such as stateless or centralized resource management. A Complex Adaptive Systems approach to dependability of futuristic information infrastructures is then presented with emphasis on the detection of emergent states at the regional and global levels of these infrastructures, and the self-synchronized control of such infrastructures in response to emergent states. The key concept underlying our control strategy at the regional or global level is that the two attributes of the Complex Adaptive System in a dynamic environment, accessibility to many states and sensitivity to small perturbation, present us with an opportunity to manipulate the system’s dynamics. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Data Infrastructures for Asset Management Viewed as Complex Adaptive Systems

Data infrastructures represent information about physical reality. As reality changes, data infrastructures might also be subject to change. Researchers have increasingly approached physical infrastructures as being complex adaptive systems (CAS). Although physical infrastructures are often approached as CAS, the underlying data infrastructures hardly are. Studying data infrastructures as CAS h...

Dependability of VLSI for Applications in Social Information Infrastructure

Our daily lives heavily depends on the social information infrastructure, which includes a huge numbers of VLSI chips. Various system failures are caused by physical faults in the circuits, human errors in design/fabrication/operation and malicious attacks. In this paper, the causes and countermeasures of failures of VLSI are summarized. The discussion leads a new direction of researches of des...

Designing Cyber Warfare Information Infrastructure Resilience

Due to many cyber attacks in the last years, governments are realizing how vulnerable they have become should there be a break out of a cyberwar. This urged them to establish a cyber warfare information infrastructure in a short time. However, this cyber warfare information infrastructure relies heavily on public infrastructures, like electricity and the Internet, which will be most likely targ...

Metadata Ranking and Pruning for Failure Detection in Grids

The objective of Grid computing is to make processing power as accessible and easy to use as electricity and water. The last decade has seen an unprecedented growth in Grid infrastructures which nowadays enables large-scale deployment of applications in the scientific computation domain. One of the main challenges in realizing the full potential of Grids is making these systems dependable. In t...

Design theory for dynamic complexity in information infrastructures: the case of building internet

We propose a design theory that tackles dynamic complexity in the design for Information Infrastructures (IIs) defined as a shared, open, heterogeneous and evolving socio-technical system of Information Technology (IT) capabilities. Examples of IIs include the Internet, or industry-wide Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) networks. IIs are recursively composed of other infrastructures, platforms,...
